I am a sucker for romance
Monday, October 8, 2012@3:11 AM

I have a penchant for romance. My movie collection ranges from Sharon and Gabby movies to contemporary chick flicks to classic love stories like Casa Blanca and Roman Holiday. I devour Meg Cabot novels, religiously read Jane Austen's classic every October and unfailingly adore love teams.

I am a proud sucker for all this hopeless romantic bullsh*t.

It all follows the same formula, though: Boy meets Girl, they fall in love.

But to our entertainment, they won't end up together until the credits, the last season or the last page. Even fairytales don't end up with happily ever after right away. And that folks, is the reason why romantic stories are interesting to me. How the writers (or anyone in-charge of the storyline) will make me believe that the protagonists really love/d each other.

The quintessential third wheel.

Someone much better than the boy or girl to make us realize that love is definitely more than wealth and beauty, to make us believe that love is not all about perfection, but you have to be the perfect fit; or someone worse, most times, they are so wicked that they make us root for the lead from end to finish, perhaps to make us comprehend that love may and will hurt but against all trials and tribulations, it will definitely prevail. (Well, because three is a crowd and for me, never a magic number to end a story with. Even Vicky Cristina Barcelona didn't end with a threesome!)

The never ending conflicts.

Social status. Families. Financial Problems. Magic, even!
We all know the drill: No conflict = No story.

The one sweet kiss.

The eye contact, the zooming in lenses, dolly-tracked cameras. After the rain pour down, after a long run in the beach or the Prom King and Queen coronation, even the big game. You've seen it too many times.

All of us romantics, have been programmed to believe, yearn and wait for 'the one' because the boy and the girl who met and fell in love always end up together... (not just forever, but at least they do. Blame those MALE romance novelists, yes, I'm talking to you Nicholas Sparks, and yes, you David Nicholls... and maybe Emerick Domingo and Dennis Garcia in the near future, I really hope not!)

But as I said earlier... the story must defend itself. The writers should make us BELIEVE.
