Problem. Formula. Solution.

Probably none of my friends know this story but I am sharing it now....
We were very poor when I was in high school. No one had a single clue, though. I still am enrolled in a private Catholic school, still has a car, still wearing fancy clothes and apparels. It seemed that nothing has changed so no one would really expect that the crisis we had before I graduated elementary really did affect us, in fact led us close to bankruptcy.
Don't get me wrong because I've never pretended that we still are as wealthy as we were, people just assumed and maybe, just maybe, because I never staged a big drama, made a big deal out of it even.
I was able to study because of numerous scholarships and with the help of relatives, my brother on the other hand, was sent to school by a generous aunt. I still can remember how difficult it was, I can't even buy myself a pricey chocolate drink because I had to save, I have enough money to feed myself, but still, I just opt to buy an energy bar so I can endure the day, and later as the class ends, my friends and I would just go to the nearest street food stand and buy everything we want (I'm still bounded with my budget, though). I had to save. I need to have extra money. Why? Because being in a private school is expensive, I'm in the cream section so that would mean, I'd even spend a little more. Projects here and there, group work, poster making contests, etc. That is why I need, no, I must be thrifty.
Some things have changed today, I can now buy that chocolate drink anytime I want to, now, my problem is I'm not that thrifty anymore.
I really won't reveal all this had it not been for this:
Yesterday, I went to NBS to purchase new books (which in the end turned into a deck of Tarot cards), and I noticed that they were on sale, unfortunately not on books but their calculators are. I immediately remembered my high school days and how I longed to have a scientific calculator. I love Math, in fact, I'm good in Math. I'm no wizard but I believe that I used to top every test, you can only imagine the frustration I had come junior year that we need the help of a Scientific Calculator in solving the problems. I literally memorized how to solve the problems in long hand so I won't need to procure one but yes, being in a private school and all, teachers have the right to mandate anything as compulsory. But my savings won't buy me a shiny calculator and I was too shy to ask for money to buy the device because I know it isn't necessary, knowing that I can solve the problems in long hand. However, there are answers only a machine can give, solutions only a device can offer, so I was forced to buy the smallest and most inexpensive SciCal in the market, and with great savings comes great quality problems. My calculator is not as user-friendly as my classmates' they can even play and type in words in theirs, mine? Just a cute little device enough for me to survive Geometry. Now, if you ever are in the same situation I'm in back then. Don't fret, cos help will surely come your way so never let a calculator stop you from reaching your dreams, just cover your ears, stay away from distractions and don't forget to remain focused. You'll get to where you're supposed to be someday... believe me because I did. Comments 0 |
